Go back to Awards Page

The Female Sports Star of the Year Award is given to one female athlete, group of female athletes,  or female coach to celebrate outstanding sports achievement or success in the past year or season.  Nominees accepted must be from the Pacific Northwest or play/coach here in the Pacific Northwest to be eligible.

2009 NOMINEES:

Tamari Miyashiro

The senior from Hawaii started her Washington career as a non-scholarship player and ended as the two-time National Defensive Player of the Year. She broke the school record for digs and climbed to ninth on the NCAA all-time list.  A three-time All-Pac-10 choice, she is now working out with the U.S. national team.

Kendra Schaaf

No other Washington runner has been named Pac-10 Cross Country Athlete of the Year, and she’s done it twice. Only a sophomore, the Saskatchewan native became the first female Husky in 26 years to be nominated for college cross country’s top individual award. She was runner-up at the NCAA Division 1 championships.

Jessica Pixler

She dominated NCAA Division II cross-country, winning the national championship for a third time. She also won her conference and regional championships all four years. Already named SPU’s Athlete of the Year three times and with track season still to go, the senior from Sammamish has amassed nine national titles.

UW Softball Team

Coach Heather Tarr’s Huskies made school history by winning the Women’s College World Series. They swept Florida in the Championship Series, with Series MVP and national Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie getting the victory in both games. Washington won its first title in its 16th consecutive year of post-season play.

  Michelle French

One of the Seattle area’s most accomplished soccer players ever, she was diagnosed with a rare form non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She decided to use her fight against the disease as a teaching moment for the girls’ teams she coached. Showing determination and good humor throughout, she was back playing with the Sounders Women in six months.
