 Seattle Sounders FC

In 1994 MLS began finding cities to expand this newly founded league, Seattle being one of those cities. Unfortunately, this strong soccer supported city failed to gain a team because of the lack of a facility in the surrounding area. When CenturyLink field was built in 2004, this put Seattle back on the map and in contention to bring in an expansion team for the city. By November 2007 Paul Allen, and TV personality Drew Carey among others, invested in the team and won the right for the expansion team.

The name of the Seattle team was undecided and left up to the fans to vote for their favorite options, some of them listed as;  Seattle Republic, Seattle Alliance, and Seattle FC. However, 49% of the fans wrote in their own idea of a team name as “Seattle Sounders FC”.

In the teams inaugural season offered 22,000 season tickets, all of which were sold out. From here on out the Sounders FC have been shattering attendance records. When FC Barcelona came to play a friendly in Quest field, the attendance was 64,848; the most ever for the state.

The history for the Sounders FC has not been long, but has provided the team with great success. The first season of play the team took home the Open Cup, which is the Nations trophy for MLS. Then for the second season of play in 2010, the Sounders defended their title as US Open Cup Champions. And in 2011, the Sounders FC took home their third straight US Open Cup Championship in Goalkeeper Kasey Keller's final season.
